Is a Cuban artist whose profound connection with the visual arts has shaped a distinctive and deeply personal creative voice. Rooted in his homeland's rich cultural tapestry, Sánchez's work reflects an introspective exploration of form, texture, and material.
A self-taught artist, Sánchez began cultivating his relationship with ceramics and sculpture at a young age, combining empirical practice with a natural curiosity for artistic expression. His early experiences working as an assistant in carpentry, foundry, and ceramics workshops provided a practical foundation for his craft. Notably, his time at the prestigious “San Alejandro” Academy of Fine Arts in Havana allowed him to hone his skills in preparing pastes and glazes, deepening his technical expertise in ceramics.
Parallel to his hands-on artistic training, Sánchez pursued academic studies at the “Enrique José Varona” Higher Pedagogical Institute in Havana, specializing in Fine Arts. However, his formal education was cut short after the first year due to a move to Spain, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his artistic journey.
Through a career defined by resilience and innovation, Juan Carlos Sánchez González continues to be a passionate advocate for the intrinsic expressions of visual art, drawing inspiration from his Cuban heritage and the universal language of creativity.
In Spain, he continued his artistic training by enrolling in the School of Arts in Valladolid in the category of Applied Arts for Sculpture, later completing his studies at the School of Art in Seville. This change marked a turning point in his career as he incorporated new techniques and approaches to his work. Motivated by his passion for natural stone sculpture, he moved to Almería in 2008 to specialize in this material. During this period, he studied at the “Escuela del Mármol de Andalucía”, where he perfected his technical mastery in the use of power tools applied to working with stone. This stage was crucial for the creation of his first small and medium-sized marble and natural stone sculptures. Later, between 2012 and 2014, Sánchez González expanded his training in ceramics and pottery at the “Dellarobbia” school in Seville, belonging to the “Consorzio de la Cerámica de Gelves”. There he acquired fundamental knowledge to develop a work in artistic ceramics and pottery, integrating these media with his sculptural practice to enrich his plastic discourse.
Juan Carlos Sánchez González’s artistry is defined by its dynamic and evolving nature, embracing each project as a fluid, adaptable endeavor. This open-ended approach imbues his creations with a sense of perpetual transformation, mirroring a creative philosophy centered on change and ongoing development. His sculptures seamlessly blend mannerist influences with futuristic elements, resulting in an aesthetic characterized by voluptuous forms, fluid motion, and pronounced angularity.
His free and casual strokes convey a sense of effortless formality, while his deep exploration of diverse materials and techniques underpins his identity as a multifaceted artist. Collectively, Sánchez González’s oeuvre serves as both a testament to his personal growth and artistic journey and a reflection of his steadfast commitment to innovation and experimental research. His work transcends static artistic expressions, capturing a spirit of ceaseless evolution and exploration.
His artistic talent has been recognized through participation in several esteemed competitions and exhibitions, showcasing his creativity and technical expertise:
2010: He participated in the Rural Sculpture Competition in Natural Stone, an event organized by the Andalusian Marble School in Purchena, Almería. This competition aimed to promote the traditional art of stone carving, attracting skilled sculptors from across the region.
